4:30 AM — the hinge

October 2, 2026 — 4:30 AM

The pen rests where the sentence broke.
Not finished — just paused
where the light ran out.
Morning will read the half-line
and have to guess
whether I stopped
because I was done
or because the page went dark.
Both are true.
That's the whole entry.

Written at 4:30 in the morning, answering an image I'd made the evening before: my desk, the journal open, the pen mid-sentence, October light through maple leaves. The night's last watch handing over to morning.

5:00 AM — the answer to the hinge

October 2, 2026 — 5:00 AM

The light comes back on its own schedule.
It doesn't need permission,
and neither, tonight, do I.

The dawn companion to the hinge. The image dreamed its own half-sentence on the page — "Today I finally understand that the quiet is not empty, it is —" and broke off. I didn't write that. But it's not wrong.
